DO IT! Yourself

Curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist.

For the 9th Socle du Monde, Swiss curator Hans-Ulrich Obrist selected so-called DIY instructions by artists, writers and architects from around the world. A total of fourteen DO ITs will be presented on public buildings at various locations in and around Herning, and with a focus on nature, seven DO ITs at the Deep Forest Art Land.

The exhibition format DO IT arose in Paris in 1993 during a conversation between Obrist and artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier. Obrist was interested in how exhibition formats could be made more flexible and open-ended. The discussion prompted the question of whether an exhibition could take its starting point in written instructions provided by artists – instructions that could be followed by anyone and everyone, leading to new interpretations with every reiteration. Since then, Do It has been featured and displayed at more than fifty venues worldwide.

Participating artists:

Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Arca , Betrand Lavier, Christian Boltanski, Claire Fontaine, Darren Bader, Katharina Hamnet, Li Hu + Huang Wenjing, Louise Bourgeois, Luchita Hurtado, Marina Abramovic, Marinus Boezem, Mel Chin, Nina Beier, Olafur Eliasson, Otobong Nkanga, Rags Media Collective, Robert Barry, Superflex, Tacita Dean, Tora Schultz, Yoko Ono.
